The Healthcare Staff Shortage in Canada

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and worsened the gaps in the Canadian healthcare system. An already understaffed system is now under tremendous strain.

The obvious impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are surgical backlogs and delays in appointments, however, the indirect negative impacts of the pandemic will have lasting impacts on the health of Canadians for years to come. These include:

1. A halt in preventive programs such as cancer screening

2. Worsening health among Indigenous peoples with chronic illnesses

3. Worsening mental health among health care workers just to name a few.

Working together will be the only way to recover and rebuild.

Solutions to the Healthcare problem

  1. Expand the Practice-Ready Assessment model in British Columbia.

  2. Equitably increase access to residency training positions for ITPs

  3. Build up the Associate Physician occupation as a pathway to licensure for ITPs in British Columbia.
