Research Highlight from a former ITPO Director

ree

At ITPO, we love celebrating the achievements of our members, especially when their work deepens our understanding of patient care. This time, we are proud to highlight our former director, Dr. André Coleman, who, together with Dr. Mahmood Beheshti, has just published an interesting clinical case in the Canadian Family Physician journal.

The case presents a 74-year-old patient who developed a chronic cough possibly linked to the use of statins. These medications are among the most prescribed for lowering cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular risk. While their benefits and safety profile are well established, this case reminds us that rare side effects can also occur and deserve attention.

What makes this case so important?

·      Recognition of the unusual: Chronic cough is a common symptom, but linking it to a widely used medication requires careful observation and clinical thinking.

·      Patient safety: Identifying adverse effects early can prevent unnecessary discomfort, additional investigations, or premature discontinuation. For ITPO, this article is a clear reflection of the clinical excellence and critical thinking that ITPS bring to the Canadian healthcare system.

Dr. Coleman’s work not only contributes to the medical literature but also serves as an educational reminder to health professionals to always consider the full picture when evaluating persistent symptoms. This is exactly the kind of expertise, leadership, and patient-centered care that define and we proudly celebrate at IPTO.
